South Seas Island Resort, 5400 Plantation Road, Captiva Island, Florida 33924, Tel. (239) 472-5111

Back to Sanibel, almost! The South Seas Island Resort is located on Captiva Island which is connected to Sanibel Island.  The South Seas is in the middle of a 330-acre wildlife preserve where dolphins and manatees are also regular guests.

The ASMS room rate is $209/night and includes complimentary internet access and the daily resort fee (value of $19). All of the rooms are suites and include a full kitchen (stove, microwave, plates, utensils, refrigerator).  Note that there are not many grocery stores on the island so buy groceries in Fort Myers.  The group rate is available until December 27, 2019.

Travel to the Sanibel Conference

The closest major airport is the Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, Florida.  The Southwest Florida International Airport is 37 miles from the airport and is a 1 hour and 15 minute car ride.  Conference registrants may opt to take a ride-share app/taxi (about $80 one way) or rent a car at the airport.  Note: finding a ride-share app from South Seas to the airport is nearly impossible, South Seas is too remote.  You will need to reserve a taxi to pick you up at the South Seas.  Reserve your taxi at least five hours in advance.

Here are some local taxi services:
Island Taxi - (239) 472-4888
Apple Transportation - (239) 482-1200
Island Airport Transportation - (239) 888-5282
Dolphin Transportation - (239) 530-0100

How it Works

  • Go to and select 'ASMS Sanibel 2020' from the drop-down list.
  • View postings from other attendees.
  • Create a profile on to make your own posting or to reply to an existing message. In your profile indicate the days you arrive/depart. There is also a NOTES field where you can indicate "Need ride from...", "Have a rental car, will take passengers", "I'm looking for a roommate", etc. There is a 140 character limit for this field.
  • We have posted a test profile and message that is currently displayed on the site.

Before finalizing a plan with a fellow attendee, feel comfortable to communicate with them via email or phone. You can ask for a character reference (like chat with their PI if they are a student or vice versa.) You may also contact the ASMS office (info at asms dot org) to confirm if a person is registered for the event.

This will be the first time we have deployed such a system. We hope that ASMS members and conference attendees will find this communication tool useful. Please let us know what you think.
