Getting Ready

What to Expect at Asilomar and at the Conference

View Asilomar Campus Map

The campus-like setting of the grounds and beautiful scenery will win you over. Please do bring layers. It can be warm during the day in the sun, but very COLD when fog rolls in. PLEASE bring warm clothes, layers. The damp fog can make it feel extra-cold!

This is an informal conference. People will be wearing business casual to casual clothes (vests and fleeces are encouraged). Be sure to bring comfortable shoes for walking around the campus. You may even want some easy to slip off shoes for the beach!

If you have reserved a guest room at Asilomar, pick up your room keys and meal tickets at the Social Hall (front desk of Asilomar) starting at 4:00 pm. Feel free to check-in earlier. If your room is ready, they can give you keys sooner.

For conference check-in on Friday (badge pick-up, program booklet), we will be in the CHAPEL building from 4:00-6:00 pm on Friday. Chapel will be open for all conference sessions, if you arrive after 6pm, just show up in Chapel for a session. We will have a table set-up inside the entrance to Chapel with name badges to be picked up.

What Will We Do on Sunday Afternoon for the Free Time?

There is no obligation to do anything. So relaxing on your own, is fine. We will have sign up sheets for various activities. The sign up sheets are to help you/us form groups interested in doing the same thing. Many people will have rental cars and many will not. We will work together to make sure everyone gets to where they need to go.

Here are some examples of activities we will list on sign up sheets. You are welcome to suggest your own thing if you want company (we will have some blank sheets).

  • Kayaking on Monterey Bay (cost is ~$40 and includes wet suit and sit-on-top kayak) - Kayaking experience not needed, but you do need to know how to swim.
  • Bike Ride - there are cruiser style bikes for rent at Asilomar. Get together with a group and ride around the local area (from Asilomar toward Monterey/Cannery Row is great, it follows the coast). For those interested in road biking (serious distance), there are bike shops in Monterey that rent high-performance road bikes.
  • Point Lobos Hike/Walk - beautiful drive to a lovely scenic area.
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium - drive or walk to this incredible aquarium. It is Sunday so there will be crowds. It's worth it though if you have not visited before.
